A road...

This road is not much to look at. It's pretty rough. No bitumen. No gutters. Its just a dirt road. This road is in Cambodia. Jess and I sponsor the Trapaing Angkrong village through the Lutheran World Service, Partner a Village program. Amongst many other things, our donations covered the cost of this road.

I didn't really understand how much impact a dirt road could have:

The road that was built with your VPP funds is a real area of pride for the village. It is finished now, and families are giving their time to plant grass along the edges to prevent erosion and damage to the precious new structure. Before this road was built, only motorcycles could travel this way to connect to the villages nearby (but only in the dry season). With this new road, cars and vans can pass easily at all times of the year. Small businesses are able to open in the village since customers (of small shops and battery services) can travel here from other places. Traders are arriving to buy farmers' vegetables and crops, and farmers can transport their own produce to markets easily (and cheaper). In the past, children could not get to school when there had been a lot of rain, but now they can get to school without interruption. Villagers can also travel to the Health Centre for health care easier, more cheaply and more comfortably.

We reckon supporting people in need is a good thing. Whether you donate your time, your skills or your money... have a look around, there are plenty of people in this world that need all or some of those things....
