Aakifah and Riyaad
One of our favourite weddings from this year would have to be that of Aakifah and Riyaad. We first met with Aakifah back in 2010 at her parent's house, we instantly knew that these were special people. We felt so welcome in their home and Aakifah and her Mum were both so so lovely. We also enjoyed Aakifah's Mum's amazing cooking on our second visit, real indian food! Anyway... back to the wedding! So Aakifah and Riyaad had an Indian Islamic wedding, previously we had photographed an indian wedding however that one was Hindu so this was a whole new experience. So, to explain a little bit, I met up with Aakifah at her parents house where she was getting ready and where all the ladies were gathering for some lunch, and then it was time for the ceremony (Nikah). This was a little different, Steve was over at the Mosque with Riyaad where the ceremony was held, while all of us at the house listened in on the phone. It was so lovely to see the excitement of Aakifah and her Mum and sister (and friends and family) when they were officially married - it is moments like these that the language spoken doesn't matter - you can see and feel what is happening. So it was hugs and kisses all round. : ) And then, time to lock the doors! It's tradition for the groom to 'Fetch the Bride' - the ladies lock him out and he has to bribe his way in.
So after he had seen his beautiful bride, we headed over to his families house for a quick hello and then off to do a few photos before heading to the reception. This wedding will definitely be one that we will remember forever. We had such a great time and felt so so welcomed by everyone. Now I just need to organise some cooking lessons with Aakifah's mum : )
