Maternity Photos With Kids

A Documentary Approach to Lifestyle Maternity Photography

When you're expecting a second (or third or fourth) baby, pregnant life usually looks a little different to the first time around .

You might have a very busy toddler. Someone probably needs a snack. And the idea of asking small children to stand nicely and smile for a maternity photoshoot can feel… a little impossible.

That’s why my maternity sessions are photographed in a documentary style — especially when there are little kids involved.

Rather than carefully posing everyone, I simply spend time with your family and photograph what naturally unfolds.

What Does Documentary Maternity Photography Look Like?

A documentary maternity session focuses on real life and real connection.

Instead of directing every moment, I quietly observe and capture the interactions that are already happening between you and your family.

That might look like:

  • Reading stories together on the couch

  • Walking to the park as a family

  • Eating a snack together or playing

These are the moments that tell the real story of this stage of family life.

Many people might describe this as a lifestyle maternity session, because it’s relaxed and natural. But the goal goes a little deeper than that — it’s about documenting your family as you truly are, rather than creating moments just for the camera.

Including Your Kids in Maternity Photos

When you’re expecting another baby, your children are part of that story too.

They’re about to become big brothers or sisters. Their world is about to shift in ways they might not fully understand yet.

Including them in your maternity photos captures this short season in between:

  • when your toddler is still the baby

  • when your family of three is about to become four

  • when everyone is still adjusting to the idea of a new baby

These photos often become incredibly meaningful later on because they show the relationships that existed before the new baby arrived.

When Kids Don’t Sit Still

One of the biggest worries parents have before a photoshoot is:

"What if my kids don’t cooperate?"

The truth is, they don’t need to and honestly - sometimes my favourite photos are when things do go pear shaped!

Because documentary-style sessions don’t rely on children sitting still or looking at the camera. Instead, I photograph a real day in your life. Sometimes that includes the toddler refusing to put their pants back on or getting upset because you gave them the blue cup instead of the red one.

It’s the real moments that are worth remembering.

Documentary & Lifestyle Maternity Photography in Brisbane

If you're pregnant and already have kids, maternity photos don’t need to feel stressful or overly structured.

A documentary maternity session simply captures your family spending time together — the chaos, the connection, and the little everyday moments that make up your life right now.

Many people searching for this style might call it a lifestyle maternity session, but the heart of it is the same: relaxed, natural photos that reflect your real family.

If you're looking for a lifestyle maternity photographer in Brisbane who takes a documentary approach, I’d love to spend some time with your family and help capture this short and meaningful season before your new baby arrives.
