Unscripted Family Photography + Unposed Newborn Photography

Candid family photo

This is more than a photography session - this is how we create memories out of your everyday moments… and trust me, these are the photos you’ll want to look at every single day when your children are grown.

These are the photos you’ll grab when your fire alarm goes off. These are the photos that will make you fall deeply in love with your life.

Unscripted and Unposed. That simply means that I won’t ask you to be anything you’re not. You won’t need to plan to all wear weird matching outfits or clean your house from top to bottom. I photograph family sessions + newborn sessions a little differently - I simply want to hang out with you. On one of your normal, wonderful family days. An afternoon playing outside. During your bath + bed routine. Or perhaps a sleepy morning around the kitchen table - did someone say pancakes happen on a Sunday? Count me in.

 The Process

01

Reach out. Let’s get to know each other - often the best photos are taken when families feel comfortable with me so let’s connect first. We can chat about what photos you’re wanting, you can tell me what your family is like and heck, we can even chat about your favourite Netflix binge - Schitt’s Creek anyone?

02

Let’s book your session. If you want a family photography session, we can do it at your home (which I prefer) or at an outdoor location you all love. I am happy to be led by you guys! If you’re booking a newborn photography session, I always do these in your home and they are normally booked while you’re still pregnant, during the first couple of weeks of your baby being earth side.

03

It’s shoot day! You don’t need to worry about what you’re going to wear or how the session is going to go. That’s the best thing about the way I approach family photography (& newborn photography actually!) It’s all about you and your family being yourselves - so just get dressed and go about your day how you normally would - and I’ll see you all soon!

04

WOW. That was a blast. Now that your photography session is done, I’ll be busy editing all of your images and be in touch when they’re ready to view. I cannot wait to show you how beautiful your life and your family really is. I think you know - but soon, you’ll be able to see proof.

 Client Love

“We had a lovely casual family session with Jess - her non-abtrusive, and calm style helped our very awkward selves feel very comfortable in front of her camera, which definitely showed in the final images. She caught some truly beautiful moments (including a mini-melt down by our 2yo, which was strangely gorgeous) from our very average afternoon, and the photographs will be something we will treasure as a perfect snapshots of this period of our lives.

Family Photography FAQs

Preparing for Your Family Photography Session

  • Since my family photography sessions focus on real moments, the best thing to wear is whatever feels like you. Choose clothes that are comfortable for playing with your kids — something you can move and relax in.

For the little ones, think about what they’ll actually be doing — whether that’s baking, painting, or running through the sprinkler. Comfort (and clothes you don’t mind getting messy) always win! And generally there’s time for costume changes anyway - another benefit of a longer session!

If you do want a more cohesive look, I’d suggest choosing a couple colours and all wearing shades of those colours. That way your outfits look good together without being too matchy matchy.

  • You are welcome to plan a few things but you definitely don’t need to! Because these are documentary-style family sessions, things work best when they’re relaxed and unplanned. Simply do what you normally do together as a family — play, read, bake, or just hang out.

The beauty of this style is that kids (and adults!) soon forget about the camera. Nothing is forced or awkward, and I’ll quietly photograph what unfolds naturally. Even the unexpected moments — the spills, giggles, and chaos — are all part of your story.

  • Please don’t stress about that! You absolutely don’t need a Pinterest Perfect house. I’m looking for light, love, and connection — not perfection.

Some of the most meaningful photos happen in the messy kitchen, the toy-filled living room, or the backyard where life really happens. I’m well versed in photographing amongst the mess in my own home - no judgement here - life is busy and the little people in your life are more important anyway.

  • Absolutely! Including grandparents, cousins, or other loved ones can make your family photography session even more meaningful. Just let me know ahead of time and make sure to book in either the Family Story or Full Story Session so we have a bit more time.

They’re also welcome to just pop in for part of the session. I feel like I’ve said it already, but I really do just go with the flow.

  • Definitely! Pets are part of the family too, and they often help everyone relax into the session. I love including pets in your photos.

  • I’m based on the Northside of Brisbane, and photograph families all across the Brisbane area. (Yes I do regularly venture over the river so South-siders are more than welcome) I’m also available for sessions on the Sunshine CoastGold Coast, Ipswich and even interstate (a small travel fee may apply).

If you’re looking for a Brisbane family photographer, I’d love to chat — get in touch here for more info.

  • I take on a limited number of family photography sessions each month. It’s best to book early — especially for weekends — but feel free to get in touch to check current availability.

You can book your session online here If you don’t see a time or date that suits, just fill in the contact form and we’ll find something that works for your family.

During Your Family Photography Session

  • Most family photography sessions in Brisbane are held at home because that’s where everyone feels most comfortable and natural.

If you’ve booked a Short & Sweet Session, we can shoot either in your home or at a location that’s special to your family. Whether it’s your backyard, a local park, or a favourite café, the goal is to capture your family just being yourselves.

  • The length of your session depends on which type you book:

    • Full Story Sessions usually last around 3-4 hours, giving your family time to completely let your guard down and more time to capture the ordinary, everyday moments in your day (that I think make the best photos of all!)

    • Family Story Sessions usually last around 2-3 hours, giving your family time to relax and for the kids to forget there’s even a camera around.

    • Short & Sweet Sessions are around 45–60 minutes — perfect for families who want something a little shorter while still keeping things relaxed and natural.

Either way, there’s no rush — my goal is always to capture natural, relaxed moments.

  • You’re definitely not alone! Many people (myself included) don’t love being in front of the camera. The good news is, my sessions are very relaxed — no posing or pressure.

During a Full Story Session, you can completely forget I’m there and just be yourselves. I photograph from the background while you connect naturally. Even in a Short & Sweet Session, I’ll gently guide you so it doesn’t feel awkward or staged.

  • If your session is planned outdoors and the weather turns wild, we have a few options. We can:

    • Move the session inside your home (some of my favourite photos happen there anyway)

    • Reschedule for another day

    • Or, if it’s just light rain and you’re up for a bit of fun, we can embrace it — puddle jumping and all!

The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and relaxed, so we’ll make the call together.

  • Not at all. The Family Story or Full Story Session is perfect for kids that need a little more time to warm up to people because there’s no pressure or posing. You’ll simply spend time together doing what you normally do, and I’ll quietly photograph those moments.

If you let me know ahead of time, I’ll plan to spend a few minutes getting to know your kids first so they feel comfortable. They can show me their favourite toy or give me a tour of their room. Or if they just want to take some time without interacting with me that’s completely fine too.

After Your Family Photography Session

  • Yes! Every family photography package includes edited, high-resolution digital images. You’ll receive them in a private online gallery where you can easily download and share with family and friends.

  • Your final gallery of edited, high-resolution images will be ready within 3–4 weeks of your session. I’ll send you a private online gallery link where you can download, share, and order prints easily.

  • Yes! You can purchase professional quality prints and albums through your online gallery from the comfort of your own home. There’s no hard sell and you are welcome to print your photos at a lab of your choice if you’d prefer. But there is something extra special about professionally printed photos.
