Why Your Pets Deserve a Spot in Your Family Photos

If your pets are part of your family — then of course they should be part of your family photos! Whether you’ve got a dog who never leaves your side, a cat who loves (or tolerates) cuddles, or even a few backyard chickens, your pets are a part of your family story.

This is one of the many reasons I love in-home family photography sessions. When I photograph families in their own space, it’s easy and natural to include the pets that make your house feel like home.

Natural, Candid Family Photos (with Pets Included!)

As with most of my Brisbane family photography sessions, I keep things relaxed and documentary-style. Nothing’s forced or overly posed — everything unfolds naturally.

And if you’ve ever tried to stop your pet from joining in, you’ll know that they usually find their own way in anyway! If you book The Family Story Session, there’s plenty of time for genuine interactions. Your pets can simply do their thing while I capture it all.

Pets Make Everyone Feel More Relaxed

If you’re a little camera-shy, having your pet in the session can make a big difference.

Pets help you and your kids relax, laugh, and forget there’s even a camera involved. They are the perfect distraction to help capture those sweet, unscripted moments that make candid family photography so special.

Celebrate the Arrival of New Pets

A new puppy, kitten, or even baby chicks — these little milestones deserve to be remembered too.

The early days of bringing a new pet home are filled with excitement (and a little chaos). Including your new furry or feathered family member in your family photoshoot captures that joy perfectly.

Embrace the Beautiful Chaos

I’ll be honest — I love the chaos that comes with photographing families and their pets. That old saying, “never work with kids or animals,” doesn’t apply here! The unpredictable moments often end up being the most genuine (and funny) photos from your session.

This photo (👆) is actually of my own family, taken during one of our more chaotic phases — a cat, a puppy and an elderly dog - plus our toddler and 5-year-old. Messy? Absolutely. But its 100% what our life looked like, and looking back now always makes me laugh.

That’s exactly what I want to capture for you.

Capture Your Family Story — Pets and All

Whether you have a playful dog, a sleepy cat, or a backyard full of animals, they all deserve a place in your family photography session. They’re part of your story — the cuddles, the chaos, and the love that fills your home.

If you’re ready to capture real, candid family photos with your pets in Brisbane, I’d love to photograph you.
